6:30pm: Anti-Racist Reading & Discussion Group

We are learning to counter and organize-against white supremacy, racism and control/oppression by the dominant forces! This is a pretty good week to join up! We didn't have readings for this week but instead have each committed to charting our race and class status, privileges, some of our background, etc. This is an exercise to help us distinguish what privileges and what oppressive forces we personally benefit from or are victims of.

Scripps Presentation & Discussion

Animal Testing, BioTechnology and Environmental Devastation in Palm Beach Gardens??? Please come and learn about this "pharmaceutical mecca" which Scripps at FAU is proposing to build in our back yard. The Scripps Research Institute at FAU Jupiter is the largest animal research center in Florida. Future plans for the facility include a demolition of an 800 acre pine flatwoods ecosystem (The Briger Tract) just south of Donald Ross Rd to make way for an entire BioTech City! Come learn about the Scripps expansion and make connections with other folks who are demanding that the public have a say in the permiting process and that there is space for public scrutiny and ethical oversight every step of the way. Come connect with FAU students against Scripps, concerned members of the community, animal rights groups, environmentalists and members of the religious community. Come to get informed and/or involved and help us organize to save the Briger Tract and keep this pharmaceutical mess out of our community!

5-7pm: Film & Discussion: "Rethink Afghanistan"

A majority of Americans oppose the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan, but it continues with no end in sight, and President Obama has escalated the conflict. Meanwhile the corporate media obfuscate the consequences of endless war, the military-industrial complex sees every international problem as a military one, and the national security state limits the President's options to: a. surge, b. bigger surge, c. biggest surge. South Florida Rethink Afghanistan (SFRA) is a local group working with other groups around the country to demilitarize U.S. policy toward Afghanistan. If you want to become better informed about this war, please join us for a showing of Robert Greenwald's film "Rethink Afghanistan" followed by a discussion led by Mike Budd. Meanwhile, check out http://rethinkafghanistan.com/.

"The Price of Pleasure: Pornography, Sexuality and Relationships" - a film screening and discussion

Once relegated to the margins of society, pornography has become one of the most visible and profitable sectors of the cultural industries in the United States. It is estimated that the pornography industry's annual revenue has reached $13 billion. At the same time, the content of pornography has become more aggressive as well as more overtly sexist and racist. Going beyond the debate of liberal versus conservative, the film features the voices of consumers, critics, and pornography producers and performers. It paints a nuanced portrait of how pleasure and pain, commerce and power, and liberty and responsibility are intertwined in the most intimate parts of our sexual identities and relationships. Link to film trailer: http://thepriceofpleasure.com/synopsis.html

WARNING: The film contains graphic scenes of sexual activity and aggression from pornographic videos; intended for audiences 18 years and older. May be disturbing or triggering, especially to those who have experienced sexual violence.

Greens On WMNF - Beyond The Twin Powers Of Politics
The Green Party of Florida will be on the air live at WMNF in Tampa on Tuesday, February 9, 1:00 pm, with the public affairs director, Rob Lorei, during his popular “Radioactivity” show. The Green Party will be sharing the hour with other third parties across the state. Tune in at 88.5 FM or on the internet at www.wmnf.org. The call-in number is 813-239-9663.

If the number of phone calls and on-line listeners indicates an interest in hearing from other political parties, WMNF may feature this show every week.

With all the hype during the last presidential elections, many believe they only have two choices at the polls. It’s time for the people to realize that they have the power to vote their values. This means voting for political parties that uphold their values, have integrity and are not "owned" by corporate interests. The Green Party does not accept any corporate money.

So mark your calendars and please listen or call in on Tuesday, February 9 at 1:00 pm.
